Falling Leaves: Words of Grace

Each and every day blessings fall like leaves from Heaven.  In this space, there will be periodic posts of inspirational quotes.  May they be like manna in the wilderness, food for your soul.

“You have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Harriet Tubman

"Prayer means idleness for God, emptiness before God. Prayer time is time put beyond usefulness to yourself. You bring yourself and your time and your desire to be with God; you come with your availability. The fact that you are not busy but available suggests that God is the main actor in your prayer, what happens in prayer is God's agenda.”

Sacred Space, The Irish Jesuits

"Hospitality as charity offers crumbs from our tables; hospitality as justice offers a place at the table.

— Eleazor S. Fernandez (Feasting on the Word, Year A, Vol 4)

"You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

— Unknown

“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

— Catherine of Siena

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ― Apple Inc.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

—  Pablo Picasso

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

―Vincent Van Gogh

"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the r
oad ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
And the fact that I think I am following your will
Does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
You will lead me by the right road,
Though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always
Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”

— Thomas Merton, "Thoughts In Solitude"

"I would rather fail as an artist than succeed as anything else.”

—  Robert Dowling

"Disturb us, Lord, when We are too pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;

Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wilder seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask you to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push back the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

This we ask in the name of our Captain,
Who is Jesus Christ."

— Sir Francis Drake

"Love recognizes no barriers.  It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”

— Maya Angelou

"When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer".

 Corrie Ten Boom

"I have always been terrible at praying.

I forget.
My mind wanders.
I fall asleep.
I don’t pray enough.
I don’t understand what prayer is
or what prayer does.

If prayer were a school . . .
I would flunk praying.

But prayer isn’t school.
It is a mystery.

Maybe the mystery is . . .
Jesus loves terrible prayers.
Maybe . . .

When I can’t think of anything to say, He says what I can’t say.
When I talk too much, He cherishes my too many words.
When I fall asleep, He holds me in His lap and caresses my weary soul.
When I am overwhelmed with guilt at my inconsistent, inadequate praying
He whispers, “Your name is always on my lips.”

I am filled with gratitude, my soul overflows with thankfulness and I…
I… find myself saying over and over again, “Thank you.”
Praying the mystery."

“A Terrible Prayer” by Michael Yaconelli from a great little book entitled, “Ragamuffin Prayers.”

‎"Let us not tire of preaching love; it is the force that will overcome the world."

— Oscar Romero

I was sick, and you pointed out the behaviors that led to my sickness. I was in prison, and you said I was getting what I deserved.”

"In Hebrew, the word shabbat (from which we get Sabbath) means “to cease.” Abraham Joshua Heschel described the Sabbath are a great cathedral in time, the Jewish equivalent of sacred architecture. The meaning of Sabbath is to celebrate the holiness of time, to release the tyranny of space and the objects that demand our attention. It is a day to taste the eternal quality of life."

--- Christine Valters Paintner, PhD from The Online Self-Study Retreat Seasons of the Soul: Honoring our Sacred Rhythms

The older I get, the less interested I am in investigating the truth about our lives, and the more interested I become in the way we see that truth. Because what seems to matter in the end is not so much what happens to us, but how we perceive what happens to us. That perception, ultimately, becomes the world that we will inhabit.

-- Elizabeth Gilbert

All that matters is this moment. Everything behind you is gone, and everything in front of you is unknown, so all you can ever do is be the best version of yourself right now.
